Chapter 6 - The Tearful Confession

That evening, I was cooking dinner when the doorbell rang again.

I expected another lawyer or a process server.

Instead, I found Lauren standing on my porch, completely alone.

She looked awful.

Her designer clothes were wrinkled, and her makeup was smeared from crying.

“Can I please come in?” she whispered, looking terrified.

I hesitated, but Greg nodded from the hallway.

I stepped aside and let my sister into my home.

Lauren collapsed onto our sofa, burying her face in her hands.

“Trevor knows everything,” she sobbed violently.

“His mother hired a private investigator who found out about the hospital incident.”

“Are they divorcing you?” I asked, feeling a strange mix of pity and anger.

“No,” Lauren choked out.

“Trevor wants an heir, but I had complications after I gave birth to Sophie.”

She looked up at me, her eyes hollow.

“I can never have children again, Megan.”

The room went completely silent.

“So Trevor’s family wants Sophie to be their official heir,” Greg realized, disgusted.

“They want to erase her adoption and pretend she is a legitimate child of the marriage to save face.”

Lauren nodded, crying harder.

“Our parents are forcing me to sue for custody,” she confessed.

“They said if I don't get Sophie back, Trevor will leave me and our family will be ruined.”

I stared at the woman I used to call my sister.

“You don't want her because you love her,” I said coldly.

“You want her because she is a prop to save your pathetic marriage.”

Lauren flinched as if I had struck her.

“Please, Megan, just give her to me,” Lauren begged.

“Get out of my house,” I commanded, pointing to the door.

She had made her choice seven years ago.

Now, she would have to live with it.
