Chapter 6 - The Great Escape

"We have to move, now," I whispered, pulling the terrified teenager from under the bed. He was so weak he could barely stand, but adrenaline fueled us both.

I grabbed a discarded doctor’s coat from the back of a chair and threw it over Leo’s hospital gown. We couldn't take the main elevators. I practically carried him toward the concrete stairwell, glancing nervously over my shoulder.

As we descended three flights of stairs, the heavy metal door above us slammed open. Heavy boots echoed down the shaft.

"They’re coming," Leo panicked, his knees buckling.

"Don't look back," I ordered. We pushed through the second-floor exit, slipping into the bustling cafeteria. I grabbed a wheelchair parked near the entrance, shoved Leo into it, and kept my head down as we navigated through the lunch rush.

We burst through the delivery exit just as Arthur's men entered the cafeteria behind us. I wheeled Leo to my car, shoved him into the backseat, and threw a blanket over him. I peeled out of the loading dock, merging violently into downtown traffic. My phone began to ring. It was Arthur.

I rolled down the window and threw the phone onto the freeway. We were ghosts now.
