Leo’s revelation echoed in my head like a siren. If Arthur had murdered my sister to cover up massive financial fraud, the evidence had to be somewhere.
I left Leo under armed police guard and drove back to Arthur’s house.
The crime scene tape fluttered in the misty morning breeze, but Detective Miller allowed me inside to gather a few of Claire’s old belongings that I needed for comfort.
I stood in the den, staring at the massive saltwater aquarium. “Could you feed the fish?” Arthur had asked. It was a bizarre request. He had an automatic feeder. I could see it clamped to the side of the glass, fully stocked with pellets.
Why send me here? Was it a test? Or did he want to frame me for finding Leo dead?
I walked closer to the tank. The water bubbled furiously from the heavy-duty filtration system in the corner.
Something caught my eye—a flash of neon green plastic wedged behind the intake tube. I rolled up my sleeve, plunged my hand into the frigid, salty water, and pried the object loose.
It was a waterproof canister, the kind scuba divers use to keep matches dry.

My hands shook as I twisted the cap off. Inside was a small, encrypted USB flash drive and a diamond ring.
It was Claire’s wedding band. The one Arthur claimed had been lost in the ambulance the night she died.
