Chapter 14 - Checkmate

Arthur looked at the agents, then back at me. For a split second, I thought his arrogance would override his survival instinct—that he would pull the trigger anyway. His finger tightened on the trigger.
"Don't do it, Arthur," Leo said, his voice surprisingly steady. "You've lost."
The reality of the situation finally seemed to penetrate Arthur’s sociopathic armor. He looked at the boy he had starved and tortured, the nephew he had tried to erase. The gun trembled in his hand. Slowly, the arrogant billionaire dropped the weapon onto the tile floor. It clattered loudly, a sound of absolute defeat.
Agents swarmed him instantly, slamming him against the steel prep counter and slapping heavy metal cuffs onto his wrists. As they dragged him away, he locked eyes with me one last time, a look of pure, unadulterated hatred.
"You're dead, Sarah!" he screamed as they pulled him out the door. "The cartel will find you!"

"Let them try," Marcus said, stepping forward and wrapping a comforting arm around my shaking shoulders. "By tomorrow morning, his accounts will be frozen, and he'll be singing to the feds for a plea deal. The cartel will consider him a liability. He's a dead man walking."
I looked at Leo. Tears were streaming down his face, but for the first time since I found him in that dark basement, he smiled.
