Chapter 5 - The Chase

I slammed the laptop shut, shoved it into my tote bag, and bolted for the back exit. The cybercafe was a maze of dimly lit cubicles, and I knocked over a chair to slow the man in the suit down.

"Ms. Pendelton! Wait!" he shouted, his heavy footsteps pounding behind me.

I burst through the alley door into the pouring Seattle rain. I sprinted toward my car, fumbling blindly for my keys. My heart hammered wildly against my ribs as I threw myself into the driver’s seat, locked the doors, and jammed the key into the ignition. The man slammed his fists against my window just as I hit the gas, leaving him in a cloud of exhaust.

I had to get to Leo. If Arthur knew I had the drive, he would know Leo was a loose end.

I broke every speed limit getting back to the hospital. When I sprinted onto the fourth floor, chaos had erupted. The police officer assigned to Leo's door was unconscious on the linoleum. The door to Room 412 was wide open.

"Leo!" I screamed, rushing inside.

The bed was empty. The IV bags were ripped from their poles. But as I spun around to sound the alarm, a hand grabbed my ankle from beneath the hospital bed.

"Sarah," Leo whispered, trembling in the shadows. "They're here."
