Chapter 13 - The Reunion

Matteo walked into the fortified safe house just as the sun began to rise over the New York skyline. His clothes smelled of gunpowder and smoke.
Camilla was sitting on the edge of the sofa, wrapped in a blanket, staring blankly at the floor. When she heard the door open, she jumped to her feet.
Matteo stepped aside.
Dante walked in, supporting Julian. The boy was bruised, battered, and sporting a cast on his arm, but he was alive and smiling weakly.
"Julian!" Camilla screamed, dropping the blanket and sprinting across the room. She threw her arms around her brother, sobbing hysterically as she pulled him tight against her. "Oh my God, you're alive. You're safe."
"I'm okay, Cam," Julian whispered, hugging her back. "These guys... they saved me."
Camilla looked over Julian’s shoulder at Matteo. Her eyes were swimming in a sea of guilt, gratitude, and absolute awe. She gently let go of her brother and walked over to Matteo.
She didn't speak. She just fell to her knees in front of him, pressing her forehead against his hands. It was the ultimate gesture of submission and gratitude in their world.
Matteo immediately knelt down, grabbed her by the shoulders, and pulled her to her feet, wrapping her in a fierce, unbreakable embrace.

"Never again," Matteo whispered fiercely into her hair. "Never keep a secret like that from me again. We are partners. We face the wolves together."
"I swear it," she cried into his chest. "I love you, Matteo. I love you so much."
