Chapter 8 - The Price of Loyalty

My breath hitched in my throat. I pressed my hand over Chloe’s mouth to muffle any sound she might make, tears streaming hot and fast down my cheeks as I stared through the narrow viewing slit.

Silas was outmatched, poisoned, and surrounded.

Yet, as Julian Rossi pulled back the hammer of his silver pistol, a sudden, deafening roar echoed from the hallway behind the intruders.

"Drop your weapons! Federal—no, drop 'em or you're dead!"

Marcus Vance burst through the doorway like a freight train, followed by four loyal capos carrying submachine guns. Before Rossi's mercenaries could pivot to return fire, the room erupted into a blinding storm of muzzle flashes and deafening gunfire.

Bullets chewed through the antique furniture, shattering porcelain lamps and sending wood splinters flying in all directions. One of Rossi’s men dropped instantly, clutching his shoulder as he crashed to the floor. The other two scrambled for cover behind the heavy mahogany desk.

Julian Rossi cursed violently, diving behind a velvet sofa as plaster rained down from the ceiling.

"Marcus! Flank the desk!" Silas commanded, his voice cutting effortlessly through the gunfire.

"On it, Boss!" Marcus roared, laying down a suppressing wall of lead that kept Rossi's men pinned down.

The shootout lasted less than two minutes, but it felt like an eternity. The air grew thick with acrid gunpowder smoke and the smell of scorched plaster.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the suite burst open again, and a fresh wave of armed men rushed in—not Rossi’s mercenaries, but local police officers led by Captain Miller, a veteran cop who had been on Silas’s payroll for over a decade.

"Nobody move! Drop your weapons!" Miller shouted, his officers swarming the room and instantly disarming Rossi's surviving thugs.

Julian Rossi rose slowly from behind the sofa, his hands raised in mock surrender, his face twisted in a mask of furious disbelief. He looked around the ruined room, realizing he had walked straight into a meticulously planned trap.

"You set me up," Rossi hissed, glaring directly at Silas.

Silas lowered his gun slowly, his breathing heavy, sweat matting his dark hair. He stepped forward, his boots crunching on broken glass. "You thought a dying man was an easy target, Julian. But you forgot one fundamental rule of the underworld."

"What's that?" Rossi spat.

"A wolf cornered in his own den is still a wolf," Silas replied coldly. He nodded to Marcus. "Take him down to the basement holding cells. Let him think about his retirement plans."

As Marcus and his men grabbed Rossi and dragged him kicking and screaming out of the room, the police officers began clearing out the remaining debris. Silas stood alone in the center of the ruined master suite, his shoulders slumping slightly as the adrenaline began to fade from his system.

He looked exhausted, broken, and utterly human.

Slowly, I pushed the hidden bookshelf door open and stepped out into the room, holding Chloe tightly by the hand.
