Chapter 6 - The Breach

The calm of Blackwood Manor shattered into absolute chaos in a matter of seconds.

Gunfire rattled through the night air like thunder, the sharp, deafening cracks of automatic rifles echoing from the courtyard below. Shouts, heavy combat boots pounding against marble floors, and the wailing emergency klaxons created a symphony of pure terror.

Chloe bolted upright from her makeshift bed, her eyes wide with unadulterated fright. Before she could scream, I lunged across the room, scooping her up into my arms and burying her face against my shoulder so she couldn't see the flashing red lights.

"Mommy! What's that?" she cried out, her voice muffled against my blouse, her little hands gripping my shirt in a death-grip.

"It's okay, baby. Mommy's here. Close your eyes and hold onto me tight," I whispered fiercely, my own voice shaking so hard I could barely form the words.

Silas didn't panic. In fact, the moment the alarms sounded, the sickly pallor on his face seemed to recede, replaced by a terrifying, lethal focus that reminded me exactly why he ruled the underworld. With a grunt of pure effort, he gripped the armrests and forced himself to stand up. His legs wobbled unsteadily beneath the heavy blanket, but he caught his balance, gripping his heavy wooden cane like a war club.

"Marcus!" Silas barked into the comms unit pinned to his lapel.

"Boss, they're swarming the ground floor!" Marcus shouted over the roar of distant gunfire. "We've got a dozen armed mercs pushing through the west foyer! They bypassed the security grid!"

"Fall back to the secondary checkpoint," Silas commanded, his voice dropping an octave into absolute authority. "Protect the armory and seal the elevator shafts. Let them think they've won the house."

"And you, sir?" Marcus hesitated.

"I'm right where I need to be," Silas growled, cutting the transmission.

He turned his dark, lethal gaze toward me. "Elena. Take the girl and get into the panic room behind the bookshelf. Do not come out for any reason, no matter who knocks on that door. Do you understand me?"

"What about you?" I asked, my chest tightening.

"I have a score to settle," Silas replied coldly. He reached under his heavy leather chair and pulled out a matte-black Sig Sauer pistol, racking the slide with a smooth, practiced motion that defied his trembling hands.

Before I could argue, heavy footsteps thundered down the hallway outside our door. Shouting voices echoed through the drywall—unfamiliar, aggressive voices speaking with the raw malice of men sent to execute a blood debt.

Rossi’s enforcers had arrived.
