Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage

Blackwood Manor looked entirely different in the harsh light of afternoon, though its oppressive atmosphere remained unchanged. The sprawling estate, surrounded by wrought-iron fences and centuries-old oak trees, now felt less like a grand home and more like a fortress bracing for a medieval siege. Armed guards patrolled the perimeter with assault rifles slung across their chests, and luxury sedans belonging to high-ranking syndicate members crowded the secondary courtyard.
Marcus led Chloe and me through the heavy mahogany front doors and straight down the polished marble corridor toward the forbidden east wing.
Unlike yesterday, the heavy oak door to Silas’s master suite stood wide open. Two armed guards stood at attention on either side of the threshold, their eyes tracking our every movement with cold suspicion. As we stepped inside, the opulence of the room hit me all over again—silk tapestries, antique furniture, and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves.
Silas Thorne was seated in a high-backed leather armchair near the massive stone fireplace.
Even seated, his commanding presence filled the room, though the physical toll of the poison was painfully obvious. His dark suit hung loosely over his broad shoulders, his skin possessed a sickly, ash-grey pallor, and a thick woolen blanket covered his lower body. His hands rested on the carved wooden armrests, trembling ever so slightly.
Yet, the moment Chloe walked through the door, his dark eyes softened in a way that defied everything I had been told about him.
"You're late," Silas said, though there was no real bite in his tone.
"We had traffic, Mr. Thorne," I replied stiffly, pulling Chloe protectively closer to my side.
Silas ignored me entirely, looking down at my daughter. "Come here, little bird," he murmured, using a voice so gentle it felt like an illusion.
Chloe didn't hesitate. Freeing her hand from mine, she trotted across the imported Persian rug, climbed up onto the footstool in front of his chair, and reached out to gently pat his knee. "Man sick," she signed with her tiny fingers, a look of profound empathy crossing her innocent face.
Silas stared at her hands, a complex mix of wonder and agony flashing across his chiseled features. He slowly raised his right hand—the one that had signed execution orders—and gently cupped her cheek with his thumb.

"Yes," Silas whispered, his voice cracking slightly. "Very sick, Chloe."
I stood a few feet away, watching the most feared criminal in the underworld bond with my deaf daughter, and felt a cold knot form in my stomach. This wasn't just a moment of comfort. It was a strategic shift in the underground empire. And out in the city, men like Julian Rossi were already sharpening their knives, waiting for the king to fall.
