Chapter 15 - Confession and Resolve

The silence in the corridor stretched out, suffocating and absolute. Silas didn't yell. He didn't draw a weapon. He simply stood there, his piercing dark eyes shifting slowly from my clenched fist back up to my tear-streaked face.

"Open your hand, Elena," he commanded softly, his voice devoid of anger, carrying only a crushing, profound sorrow.

My fingers refused to obey. I stood frozen, trembling violently, a sob catching painfully in my throat.

Without breaking eye contact, Silas reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently wrapping around my wrist. With slow, deliberate pressure, he forced my fingers open. The encrypted flash drive fell from my palm, clattering loudly against the polished marble floor before sliding away into the shadows.

"Arthur Pendelton," Silas stated flatly, as if reading my thoughts aloud.

I gasped, my eyes widening in shock. "How... how did you know?"

Silas let go of my wrist, letting his hand drop slowly to his side. He turned his gaze toward the empty corridor. "Arthur is a coward, but he's predictable. He tried the exact same trick on one of my lieutenants three years ago. Give a desperate person an impossible choice, threaten what they love most, and watch them break."

"Silas, I'm sorry," I broke down completely, covering my face with my hands as hot tears spilled over my fingers. "He said... he said if I didn't plug that drive into your terminal, they would come for Chloe. What was I supposed to do? I'm just a mother trying to keep her child alive in a war she never asked to be part of!"

Before I could collapse to the floor, strong arms wrapped around me, pulling me firmly against a solid, unyielding chest.

I froze in absolute astonishment. Silas Thorne—the most feared crime lord in Philadelphia, a man who built an empire on blood and fear—was holding me, resting his chin gently against the top of my head while I wept uncontrollably.

"You did what any good mother would do, Elena," Silas murmured, his voice rumbling deep in his chest. "You chose your child over everything else in the world. Never apologize for that."

I pulled back slightly, wiping my eyes with the back of my sleeve, staring up at him in utter bewilderment. "You're... you're not going to punish me? You're not going to lock me away?"

A faint, bittersweet smile touched the corners of Silas's mouth. "Punish the only person who ever looked at me and saw a human being instead of a monster? I don't think so." He reached down, picking up the black flash drive from the marble floor with two fingers. "Besides... Arthur made one fatal miscalculation."

"What's that?" I asked, sniffling.

"He assumed I didn't already know he was working for Dominic," Silas replied coldly, his eyes flashing with lethal intent. "The backdoor virus on this drive isn't going to crash my security grid, Elena. It's going to broadcast a high-frequency tracking beacon straight to our tactical squad."

Silas slipped the flash drive into his breast pocket and turned toward the command center doors.

"Marcus!" Silas called out sharply.

Marcus popped his head out of the doorway. "Boss?"

"Change of plans," Silas commanded, his voice dropping into that dark, absolute register of war. "We aren't waiting for them to bring the fight to the gates. We're going hunting. Saddle up the teams."
