Chapter 14 - The Burden of Choice

The rest of the afternoon passed in an agonizing, surreal blur. I moved through the grand corridors of Blackwood Manor like a ghost, the encrypted flash drive burning a hole in the pocket of my uniform skirt. Every time a guard walked past me, every time Marcus gave me a polite nod in the hallway, guilt clawed at my chest with razor-sharp claws.

How could I betray the man who had sheltered us, protected us, and offered us a future when no one else in the world cared if we lived or died?

And yet, how could I risk my daughter's life? Arthur's threat echoed endlessly in my mind: the first thing they'll look for is a little girl with a red pair of sneakers.

At 8:00 PM, I tucked Chloe into bed in our private quarters on the second floor. She was sleeping peacefully, her frayed stuffed rabbit clutched tightly against her chest, the blue cochlear implant resting on the nightstand. I kissed her forehead, my tears wetting her soft curls.

"I'm so sorry, baby," I whispered brokenly. "Mommy will do whatever it takes to keep you safe."

Leaving her locked securely inside the room, I walked down the grand marble stairs toward the underground command center. The heavy steel door was slightly ajar, a sliver of bright fluorescent light spilling out onto the polished floor.

I peeked inside. Silas was standing over the central tactical table, deep in conversation with Marcus and Tony.

"The Baltimore shipment is moving tonight," Silas was saying, tracing a route on the map with his finger. "If we hit their convoy at the interstate exchange, we cut off Dominic's primary weapons supply before he even reaches Philadelphia."

"I'll lead the strike team myself," Marcus offered immediately.

"No, Marcus. I'm going," Silas replied firmly. "I want Dominic to know I'm personally dismantling his operation piece by piece."

My heart hammered violently against my ribs. Silas was leaving the manor tonight. The master terminal in the command center would be completely unattended for at least twenty minutes while he finalized his gear in the armory.

It was the perfect opportunity.

Trembling from head to toe, I pulled the flash drive from my pocket. My fingers felt numb, clumsy, and utterly traitorous. I stepped forward, raising my hand to push the heavy steel door open and execute Arthur's treasonous command.

"Elena?"

A deep, resonant voice stopped me dead in my tracks.

I gasped, spinning around to find Silas standing right behind me in the corridor. He had slipped out of the command center unnoticed, his dark eyes studying my pale face with an intensity that pierced right through my soul.

"Silas..." I choked out, desperately trying to hide the flash drive inside my fist. "I... I was just looking for you."

Silas didn't say a word. He stepped closer, his gaze dropping slowly to my clenched fist, where the edge of the black plastic drive was visibly protruding. The air between us turned suddenly heavy, charged with a terrifying, agonizing silence.
