Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Hall

The heavy oak door clicked shut behind me with a sickening finality, isolating me in the dim corridor while my only child remained locked inside the lair of a wounded beast. I pressed my back against the cold wainscoting, my lungs refusing to pull in enough oxygen. Every instinct screamed at me to run, to grab a heavy fire extinguisher from the wall bracket, to smash the wood to splinters and drag Chloe out of danger.

Yet, I stayed.

I stayed because throughout the long, grueling months I had spent scrubbing the marble floors of Blackwood Manor, I had learned how men like Silas Thorne operated. They didn't tolerate weakness, but they respected strength. And more importantly, they were bound by a strict, ruthless code. If Silas wanted us dead, we wouldn't have made it past the foyer.

"What in God's name are you doing standing out here, cleaning girl?"

A sharp, grating voice snapped me out of my panic. I spun around to find Marcus Vance, Silas’s primary enforcer and shadow, marching down the hallway. Marcus was a mountain of a man with cold, slate-grey eyes, a broken nose that spoke of countless brawls, and a tailored suit that couldn't hide the bulk of a shoulder holster.

"I... I was just finishing up the east wing, Mr. Vance," I stammered, my hands flying behind my back to hide my trembling fingers.

Marcus stopped a few feet away, his gaze narrowing as he scrutinized me. He smelled faintly of expensive cigar smoke and gunpowder. "The east wing was inspected an hour ago. The master’s suite is off-limits. You know the rules. One strike and you're thrown to the wolves."

"My apologies," I forced myself to say, keeping my chin down to hide the terror bubbling behind my eyes. "I lost track of time."

Marcus took a menacing step closer, his eyes flicking toward the heavy oak door behind me. A sudden, terrifying frown creased his forehead. "Did you hear something? Sounds like... a child?"

My blood ran cold. "No! No, sir. Just the wind rattling the storm shutters."

Before Marcus could investigate further, the door to the master suite clicked open.

I squeezed my eyes shut, bracing for the worst. I expected Silas to emerge with a firearm, or for Marcus to draw his weapon upon seeing a stray civilian inside the forbidden sanctuary. Instead, the door opened just wide enough for a small pair of red sneakers to step out.

Chloe looked up, her dark curls bouncing around her face. She held her frayed stuffed rabbit under one arm, and with her free hand, she signed a quick, clumsy 'thank you' toward the dark room behind her—a habit she had picked up from the deaf community center where I used to volunteer.

Marcus froze, his jaw practically hitting the floorboards. In all his years of loyal service to Silas Thorne, nobody—not rival bosses, not terrified politicians, not even elite physicians flown in from Zurich—had ever walked out of that room unhurt, let alone unbothered.

A deep, gravelly voice cut through the silence from inside the dim room. "Marcus."

"Boss?" Marcus snapped to attention instantly, forgetting all about me as he turned toward the doorway.

"Bring her back tomorrow," Silas commanded, his voice dark, unyielding, and carrying the undeniable weight of absolute power. "At noon. If she's late, I'll hold you personally responsible."

Marcus blinked, utterly dumbfounded. "Sir? Bring... bring who back?"

May you like

"The girl," Silas replied coldly before the heavy door swung shut once more, locking out the rest of the world.

Marcus turned his disbelieving, stone-cold glare down at my daughter, and then slowly back up to me. The power dynamic in the hallway had shifted in a single heartbeat, and I knew that whatever war was brewing inside Blackwood Manor, we had just been thrown directly into the front lines.
