Chapter 7 - Behind the Bookshelf

"Move! Move! Clear every room on this floor!"
The harsh, barking orders echoed just outside the master suite, accompanied by the heavy thud of combat boots kicking against wooden doors.
I clutched Chloe tightly to my chest, my legs trembling so violently I could barely support our weight. Silas stepped swiftly toward the far corner of the library section of the room, grabbed a heavy brass candlestick mounted beside a massive mahogany bookshelf, and gave it a sharp twist.
With a low, mechanical hiss, a section of the shelving swung outward, revealing a narrow, pitch-black reinforced concrete room equipped with emergency lighting and a digital control pad.
"Get in," Silas ordered, his eyes never leaving the main bedroom door.
"Silas..." I breathed, the first time I had ever used his actual name without a title.
"Go, Elena," he interrupted, his voice laced with a finality that brooked no argument. "Keep her safe."
I scrambled into the dark alcove, pulling Chloe with me. As the hidden door slid shut with a heavy, airtight click, leaving only a tiny horizontal slit for us to peer through, I watched Silas turn his back to us and step into the center of the room, raising his firearm with both hands.
A split second later, the main bedroom door exploded inward in a shower of splintered wood and flying brass screws.
Three heavily armed men wearing tactical vests and ski masks poured into the room, assault rifles raised and ready to fire.
"Clear!" the lead mercenary shouted, before freezing dead in his tracks as he spotted the lone figure standing by the fireplace.
Silas Thorne stood tall, the heavy woolen blanket discarded at his feet, his suit jacket framing his imposing silhouette. Though his hands shook slightly, the barrel of his Sig Sauer was locked dead on the lead mercenary’s chest.
"Well, well, well," a smooth, arrogant voice drifted from the hallway. "Look what the cat dragged in."
Stepping past the armed thugs came Julian Rossi himself.
Dressed in an immaculate white suit that contrasted sharply with the violence of the night, Julian smiled a cold, predatory grin. He held a silver-plated pistol loosely at his side, looking like a lord surveying a conquered province.
"You look like hell, Silas," Julian mocked, taking a slow step into the ruined bedroom. "I told you... you can't fight the future. The old dogs get put down. It's just business."
Silas didn't flinch. He didn't lower his gun.
May you like
"Business," Silas repeated, his voice dripping with a lethal, controlled fury. "You poisoned my wine like a coward, Julian. You couldn't face me in the streets, so you hid behind a chemist's vial."
"A win is a win in our line of work," Julian laughed, raising his silver pistol to aim directly at Silas's head. "And now, your empire belongs to me. Say goodbye, old man."
