Chapter 9 - The Trial Begins

The media frenzy surrounding The Sterling Nanny Case was absolute chaos. Paparazzi camped outside the courthouse, desperate for a shot of the wealthy socialite accused of poisoning a child and tying up her nanny. I hired private security to keep Sarah, Tommy, and the twins completely insulated from the madness.

On the first day of the trial, I walked into the courtroom in a sharp charcoal suit, taking my seat in the front row. Sarah sat next to me, her hand gripping mine under the wooden partition. She was terrified, but she refused to hide.

Vivienne was led into the courtroom in handcuffs. She had lost weight, her blonde hair dull and unkempt, but the malice in her eyes remained. She glared at Sarah and me, a silent promise of destruction.

The prosecutor opened with a devastating timeline. They laid out the physical abuse, the psychological torment, and the exact paper trail linking Vivienne to the dark web purchase of thallium.

But Vivienne’s defense attorney was a shark. He didn't try to prove her innocence; he tried to destroy our credibility.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury," the defense attorney began smoothly. "What you have here is not a case of attempted murder. It is a case of a bitter, greedy nanny colluding with an adulterous husband to frame my client in order to steal her fortune."

He pointed a dramatic finger at Sarah.

"They want you to believe Vivienne Sterling is a monster. But the truth is, David Sterling and Sarah Jenkins were having an illicit affair long before this incident. They fabricated the poisoning, tied Sarah to that bed themselves, and used it as an excuse to steal Vivienne’s children and her money!"

A gasp rippled through the gallery. Sarah squeezed my hand so hard it hurt. I kept my face entirely neutral, refusing to give the defense the reaction they desperately wanted. They were lying, but in a courtroom, a well-told lie could be just as dangerous as the truth.
