Chapter 13 - The Healing Process

Life has a beautiful way of filling the spaces left behind by tragedy.
Six months after Vivienne was locked away, the estate was entirely transformed. The heavy, dark draperies were replaced with sheer curtains that let the sunlight pour in. The cold, modern furniture was swapped out for comfortable, plush sofas that could withstand the chaos of three toddlers learning how to run.
Tommy made a full recovery. His laughter, bright and unburdened, became the soundtrack of our home. He was fiercely protective of the twins, always holding Liam’s hand when they walked in the garden, or reading poorly pronounced bedtime stories to Emma.
Sarah and I navigated our new reality slowly, with profound respect and care. We legally finalized her biological rights to the twins, completely erasing Vivienne’s name from their birth certificates. But the legal paperwork was just a formality. The emotional bond had already cemented us into a family.
One evening, after we had put all three kids to sleep, I found Sarah standing on the balcony overlooking the lake. She was wearing a soft sweater, holding a mug of tea, the moonlight catching the faint, fading scars on her wrists.
"They went down easy tonight," I said, stepping out into the cool air and standing beside her.
"Tommy was exhausted from the park," she smiled, leaning her head against my shoulder. It was a natural, effortless movement. "David... I never properly thanked you."
"For what?" I asked, wrapping an arm around her.

"For coming home early that day," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "For not turning away. For fighting for me when I was completely powerless."
I turned to face her, gently taking the mug from her hands and setting it on the railing. "You were never powerless, Sarah. You survived the unimaginable because you are the strongest mother I know. I didn't save you. We saved each other."
