Chapter 6 - The Vault of Secrets

By sunrise, the narrative Vivienne’s lawyers were trying to spin had completely collapsed.

Detective Vance called me back just as Tommy’s eyes fluttered open for the first time. The police had cracked the wall safe in the master bedroom. What they found inside was far more damning than I could have ever imagined.

"We found it all, David," the detective said, his voice laced with disgust. "There were two vials of liquid thallium, ordered off the dark web. But we also found medical records. Your wife didn't just swap the embryos at the clinic. She kept detailed journals. She documented the entire process."

"She wrote it down?" I asked in disbelief.

"Arrogance is a hell of a drug," Vance replied. "She documented paying off the embryologist to use Sarah’s donor eggs instead of her own because she carried a genetic marker for a severe autoimmune disease and didn't want 'flawed' children. She hired Sarah specifically to keep the biological mother close in case the children ever needed bone marrow or organ transplants. Sarah wasn't just a nanny to her. She was a biological insurance policy."

Bile rose in my throat. Vivienne hadn't just been cruel; she was a calculated, sociopathic monster. She had orchestrated this entire nightmare from the very beginning.

"Hold her without bail, Detective," I said coldly. "Charge her with attempted murder."

"The District Attorney is already drafting the paperwork. She isn't seeing the outside of a cell for a very long time."

I hung up the phone and looked into the hospital room. Tommy was awake, looking weak but smiling as Sarah gently fed him ice chips. The twins were awake in my arms, babbling softly.

I walked into the room. Sarah looked up at me, her eyes filled with a profound gratitude that I didn't deserve.

"He's awake," she whispered.

"I know," I smiled softly. "And I just got off the phone with the police. Vivienne is never going to hurt you or Tommy ever again."
