Chapter 10 - The Whistleblower

The defense’s narrative was entirely dependent on smearing our character, but they severely underestimated the sheer amount of enemies Vivienne had made over the years.
On the third day of the trial, the prosecution called a surprise witness.
The heavy oak doors of the courtroom swung open, and Dr. Elias Vance, the former head embryologist at the fertility clinic, walked down the aisle. Vivienne’s face instantly drained of all color. She leaned over, frantically whispering to her lawyer, panic finally breaking through her arrogant mask.
Dr. Vance took the stand, swore the oath, and adjusted his glasses.
"Dr. Vance," the prosecutor asked, "can you explain your relationship with the defendant, Vivienne Sterling?"
The doctor sighed, looking deeply ashamed. "Three years ago, Mrs. Sterling came to my private clinic. She demanded that I swap her viable embryos with those of a donor named Sarah Jenkins. She offered me two million dollars to falsify the medical records."
"And did you accept the bribe?"
"I did," the doctor admitted, his voice cracking. "I was facing bankruptcy. But a few months ago, Mrs. Sterling contacted me again. She demanded the donor's current address and employment history. When I found out she had hired Sarah Jenkins as her nanny, I knew something sinister was happening. I kept all the encrypted emails and the wire transfer receipts. I turned them all over to the FBI last week."
The courtroom erupted into whispers. The judge banged his gavel to restore order.

The defense attorney tried to cross-examine him, desperately attempting to paint the doctor as a disgruntled employee, but the paper trail was undeniable. The emails explicitly outlined Vivienne’s plan to use Sarah’s genetics and keep her trapped as a "biological backup."
I looked over at Vivienne. She was no longer glaring. She was staring blankly at the defense table, realizing that her money and power could no longer shield her from the consequences of her own twisted mind. The trap she had built for Sarah had just slammed shut on her own neck.
