Chapter 3 - The Sirens

The room spun. The floor beneath my feet felt like it had given way to an abyss. My children were Sarah's? Vivienne had poisoned a child just to keep her biological mother trapped as a servant?
Before the shock could fully paralyze me, the sound of glass shattering echoed from the hallway. Vivienne was destroying the gallery wall in her rage.
"I am going to ruin you, David!" she screamed from the other side of the door. "If you try to leave me, I will take every penny you have, and I will make sure you never see those brats again!"
I pulled out my phone and dialed 911. My voice was eerily calm as I gave the dispatcher my address and stated that my wife had violently assaulted our nanny and confessed to the attempted murder of a child.
"They're on their way," I told Sarah, helping her to her feet. "We are getting out of this house. We are going to the hospital, and we are saving Tommy."
Ten minutes later, the wail of police sirens pierced the quiet of our gated community. Red and blue lights flashed through the nursery windows. I unlocked the door. Vivienne was sitting on the stairs amidst the shattered glass of our wedding photos, crying crocodile tears, already preparing her victim narrative for the cops.
When the officers breached the front door, Vivienne immediately pointed a trembling finger at me. "Arrest him! He went crazy! He tied the nanny up and tried to attack me!"

The lead officer looked at Vivienne, then looked up the stairs at me. I was carrying the twins in their car seats, and Sarah was right beside me, holding her bloody, bruised wrists up for the officers to see. The sheer terror in Sarah’s eyes, contrasted with Vivienne’s pristine, uninjured appearance, told the police everything they needed to know.
"Ma'am, step away from the stairs," the officer commanded, reaching for his handcuffs. Vivienne’s fake tears vanished, replaced by an ugly, feral snarl as they forced her wrists behind her back.
