Chapter 8 - Rebuilding the Pieces

A month passed. The mansion felt entirely different without Vivienne’s toxic presence haunting the halls. I had a cleaning crew come in and completely sanitize the house, removing all of Vivienne's clothes, her designer shoes, and her oppressive modern art. I wanted no trace of her left.
Tommy was finally discharged from the hospital. He was still a bit frail, requiring physical therapy to regain his strength, but his spirit was entirely unbroken.
I couldn't let Sarah return to her cramped, rundown apartment in the city. Not after everything she had sacrificed, and not when she was the biological mother of my children. I offered her the entire guest wing of the estate for her and Tommy.
"David, I can't accept this," Sarah had said, standing in the grand foyer, holding Tommy’s hand. "You've already done so much. You saved us."
"You saved my children," I corrected her, looking over at Liam and Emma playing on the rug. "And they are your children, too. We don't have to define what this family looks like right now. But you belong here, Sarah. You and Tommy. You will never have to worry about money, or safety, or Vivienne ever again."
Sarah broke down in tears, pulling me into a fierce hug. It was the first time we had truly embraced since that horrific night, and standing there, holding her, I realized just how deeply I had come to care for her. She wasn't just the help. She was the bravest woman I had ever met.
We settled into a new, beautiful routine. The mornings were chaotic, filled with the sounds of three children laughing, cartoons playing on the massive TV, and the smell of pancakes instead of Vivienne’s bitter espresso.

Tommy adored the twins, taking his role as a big brother incredibly seriously. And watching Sarah hold Liam and Emma, knowing they were truly hers, healed a part of my soul I didn't even know was broken.
But the peace was fragile. The criminal trial was looming, and Vivienne had one final card to play.
