Chapter 15 - The Epilogue

Ten years later.

The house was incredibly loud. It was a Saturday afternoon, and fourteen-year-old Tommy had invited half of his baseball team over for a pool party. Liam and Emma, now energetic ten-year-olds, were engaged in a fierce water gun battle across the patio.

I stood by the outdoor grill, flipping burgers, wearing a ridiculous apron the kids had bought me for Father's Day.

Sarah walked out of the kitchen, carrying a massive bowl of fruit salad. She looked more beautiful than ever, her laughter ringing out as a stray stream of water from Emma’s water gun caught her on the shoulder.

"Hey, watch the food, you two!" Sarah laughed, setting the bowl down and playfully threatening them with a spatula.

She walked over to me, wrapping her arms around my waist from behind and resting her chin on my shoulder. "You're burning the hot dogs, Mr. Sterling."

"I am multitasking," I smiled, turning my head to kiss her cheek.

I looked out at the chaos. At my son, healthy and strong, laughing with his friends. At my twins, fiercely loved by the mother who had literally bled for them. At Sarah, the anchor of our entire universe.

The nightmare we had endured felt like a lifetime ago. The heavy iron headboard was gone. The silk sheets were burned. The monsters were locked away in the dark where they belonged.

"What are you thinking about?" Sarah asked softly, noticing my quiet moment.

"Just thinking about how lucky I am," I replied, pulling her into my arms.

We had walked through absolute hell, betrayed by the person who was supposed to protect our home. But from the ashes of that destruction, we had forged an unbreakable bond. We had found the light. And as the sun set over the lake, casting a golden glow over our laughing children, I knew that no shadows would ever touch this family again.
