Chapter 8 - The Cut Line

My hand trembled as I swiped the screen to answer the call.

“Did you really think a storm knocked out the power, Sarah?” his mocking voice whispered through the speaker.

“I cut the lines, and your little police friend at the end of the road is currently taking a very long nap.”

Panic seized my chest, squeezing my lungs until I could barely breathe.

He was here, in the dark, hunting us in the middle of nowhere.

“Stay away from us, David!” I screamed into the phone, using his real name.

He chuckled darkly.

“I’m coming inside now, Sarah.”

The line went dead.

I grabbed Lily’s hand, pulled her out of bed, and dragged her toward the closet.

“Hide in here, baby, and do not make a sound no matter what you hear,” I instructed her.

I kissed her quickly, shut the closet door, and locked it from the outside.

I crept into the kitchen, my eyes slowly adjusting to the gloom.

I opened the drawer and pulled out the largest, sharpest butcher knife I could find.

I stood in the shadows of the living room, waiting.

Suddenly, the back door burst open, and a flash of lightning illuminated his massive silhouette.
