Chapter 1 - The Monster's Shadow

Before Lily could utter another word, the heavy footsteps of my husband echoed in the hallway.

The floorboards creaked, announcing his return from the porch.

Lily instantly snapped her mouth shut and scrambled backward against the headboard.

Her tiny hands shoved the stuffed bear over her face, hiding her terrified expression.

Marcus casually leaned against the doorframe, holding a glass of iced tea.

He smiled at me, but his eyes were cold and calculating.

“Everything okay in here, ladies?” he asked in that smooth, practiced voice.

I forced myself to smile back, though my stomach churned with nausea.

“Just saying goodnight to my sweet girl,” I replied, trying to keep my voice steady.

I leaned down, kissed the top of Lily’s trembling head, and whispered that I loved her.

She didn't respond, remaining frozen under her quilt like a trapped animal.

I stood up and walked past Marcus, fighting the urge to shove him away.

That night, I lay awake in the dark, staring at the ceiling while he snored beside me.

My mind raced through every interaction, every bath time, every silent evening.

The bruises, the flinching, the absolute dread radiating from my innocent child.

I knew I couldn't confront him without proof, or he would simply lie and manipulate his way out of it.

He had fooled me once, playing the perfect, loving stepfather.

I needed to catch him in the act, to see exactly what was happening behind that closed bathroom door.

Tomorrow, I decided, I was going to leave work early.

I would fake a migraine, sneak back into my own home, and uncover the nightmare myself.
