Chapter 5 - The Desperate Escape

I burst into my room and found Lily huddled in the corner, crying hysterically.

I grabbed a large blanket from the bed and wrapped it tightly around her wet body.

“We have to go, right now,” I told her, scooping her into my arms.

I didn't bother grabbing clothes, money, or even my purse.

My car keys were still in my pocket, and that was all we needed.

I ran down the stairs, carrying my six-year-old as if she weighed nothing.

Behind me, I heard Marcus shouting curses, his heavy footsteps thudding on the upper landing.

“You can't run from me, Sarah!” he bellowed.

I burst through the front door and sprinted across the parking lot toward the street.

The evening air was chilly, but I didn't feel the cold.

I reached my hidden car, threw the back door open, and tossed Lily inside.

Before I could get into the driver's seat, Marcus appeared around the corner.

He was holding a metal wrench from his toolbox, his face twisted into a demonic rage.

I slammed the door shut, dove into the front seat, and locked all the doors.

He reached the car just as the engine roared to life, smashing the wrench against the passenger window.

The glass spider-webbed, but it miraculously held together.

I threw the car into drive and slammed my foot on the gas pedal.

The tires squealed against the asphalt, leaving Marcus screaming in the rearview mirror.
