The trial of Greg Miller was a national media sensation.
The public was horrified by the details of the subterranean bunker and the severed finger.
He was convicted on multiple counts of attempted murder, kidnapping, and aggravated assault.
The judge sentenced him to three consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.
He would never see the light of day again.
Lily’s mother, Elena, spent several weeks in the hospital recovering from severe infection and trauma.
Surgeons were able to clean the wound, though they could not reattach the finger.
But Elena didn't care about the missing digit.
She only cared about holding her daughter again.
The hospital arranged for Lily to stay in a special pediatric suite right next to her mother's room.
I visited them every day during my rounds.
The transformation in both of them was miraculous.
The terror in Lily’s eyes was replaced by a bright, resilient spark.
She was no longer a victim hiding a terrible secret in her rain boot.
She was a hero.
The police department even held a small ceremony in her hospital room.
Detective Reynolds pinned an honorary badge to Lily’s hospital gown.
