Chapter 10 - Moving Forward

Six months later, I walked into the busy pediatric clinic for a routine check-up appointment.

Sitting in the waiting room was a familiar face.

Lily had grown taller, her broken arm completely healed.

She was wearing a bright yellow dress and a pair of new, sparkly sneakers.

No more heavy pink rain boots.

Elena sat next to her, looking healthy and vibrant, a prosthetic finger seamlessly blending with her hand.

"Dr. Mark!" Lily yelled, running across the room and wrapping her arms around my legs.

"Hey there, superstar," I laughed, scooping her up into a hug. "Look at you! No cast, no boots."

"I don't need them anymore," Lily said proudly.

Elena walked over, tears of gratitude shining in her eyes.

"We're moving out of state next week," Elena said, shaking my hand warmly. "A fresh start. I wanted to come by and say thank you, one last time."

"You don't have to thank me," I told her honestly. "Lily is the one who saved the day."

I watched them leave the clinic hand in hand, stepping out into the bright afternoon sun.

In my line of work, I see a lot of tragedy and a lot of pain.

I see things that make me question humanity.

But as I watched Lily skip down the sidewalk, free and safe, I felt a profound sense of peace.
