Chapter 5 - The Confession

The emergency room was secured within minutes.
Greg was handcuffed to a gurney and hauled away under heavy police guard.
Detective Reynolds, a stern woman with sharp eyes, stepped into the trauma bay.
She looked at the plastic bag on the tray, her face hardening.
"Is that what I think it is, Doctor?" she asked softly.
"It is," I replied, my voice hoarse. "And there's a wedding ring on it."
Lily was sitting up now, the morphine having eased the pain of her fracture.
"It's mommy's," Lily said, her voice small but clear.
Detective Reynolds crouched down to eye level with the brave little girl.
"Lily, where is your mommy right now?" she asked gently.
"In the dark room under the garage," Lily whispered. "Greg put her there when she tried to call the police."
The room went dead silent.
"He cut it off because she tried to use the phone," Lily continued, a tear slipping down her cheek. "He left it on the kitchen counter to scare me."
She looked down at her muddy, blood-stained clothes.
"I hid it in my boot when he pushed me down the stairs," she explained. "I knew the doctors would help if I brought it here."
A chill ran down my spine at the sheer bravery of this six-year-old child.
