Chapter 6 - The Race Against Time

Detective Reynolds stood up, her radio already in her hand.
"We need a tactical unit at the suspect's address immediately," she barked into the mic. "We have a hostage situation in a subterranean bunker."
She looked back at me, her expression grim.
"Greg is refusing to talk, and if that bunker is soundproof, we might not find it in time," she said.
"I'm going with you," I said suddenly, surprising even myself.
"Absolutely not, Doc, you're a civilian," Reynolds replied instantly.
"I've treated Greg before, I've been to his property to drop off medical supplies for a local charity drive," I lied smoothly. "I know the layout of the property."
Reynolds hesitated, knowing every second counted for the bleeding woman in the basement.
"Fine," she snapped. "But you stay in the mobile command center."
I handed Lily over to Sarah, promising the little girl I would bring her mother back.
The ride in the police cruiser was a blur of flashing sirens and tense silence.
We arrived at a large, isolated farmhouse on the outskirts of town.
The tactical team was already there, weapons drawn, sweeping the perimeter.
"No sign of a garage basement entrance from the outside," the SWAT leader reported over the radio.
They were running out of time.

If Lily’s mother was bleeding out, she didn't have hours to wait.
I closed my eyes, trying to think like a monster.
