Chapter 8 - The Rescue

The flashlight beams cut through the suffocating darkness of the underground room.

The air in the bunker was thick with dust and the metallic scent of old blood.

In the corner, chained to a heavy radiator, was a woman.

She was pale, severely malnourished, and shivering uncontrollably.

Her left hand was wrapped in a dirty, blood-soaked rag.

"We need a medic down here, right now!" the SWAT leader yelled into his radio.

I didn't wait for Reynolds to give me permission.

I grabbed my emergency medical kit and sprinted from the command vehicle toward the garage.

"Doc, wait!" Reynolds shouted, but I ignored her.

I scrambled down into the mechanic's pit and pushed past the armed officers.

The woman was fading fast, her pulse thready and weak.

"I'm a doctor," I told her softly, gently unwrapping the dirty rag. "Your daughter sent us. Lily is safe."

At the sound of her daughter's name, the woman's eyes fluttered open.

"Lily..." she breathed, fresh tears washing away the grime on her face. "Is she okay?"

"She's the bravest girl I've ever met," I said, applying a sterile tourniquet to her mangled hand.

We carefully placed her on a stretcher and hoisted her up into the garage.

The paramedics rushed her to the waiting ambulance.

I stood in the driveway, covered in dirt and dried blood, watching the ambulance speed away.

We had won.

The monster was locked up, and his victims were finally free.
