Chapter 4 - The Struggle for Breath

The edges of my vision began to darken as Greg squeezed my windpipe.
"You ruined everything!" he hissed, his spit hitting my face.
I clawed at his arms, but it was like trying to break through solid rock.
My lungs screamed for oxygen.
I could hear Sarah screaming for help, but she sounded so far away.
Suddenly, a small, pink blur moved into my peripheral vision.
It was Lily.
Despite her broken arm, she had climbed out of the bed.
She held one of my surgical scalpels in her good hand.
With a fierce cry, she drove the small blade deep into Greg’s thigh.
Greg roared in agony, his grip loosening just enough for me to suck in a ragged breath.
I didn't hesitate.
I drove my knee upward, striking him squarely in the groin.
He collapsed sideways, groaning in pain.
I scrambled to my feet, grabbing the discarded gun and kicking it far down the hallway.
Security guards and heavily armed police officers suddenly swarmed the corridor.
"Get on the ground! Do not move!" an officer yelled, aiming a rifle at Greg.
I scooped Lily into my arms, rushing her back into the safety of the trauma bay.

The immediate danger was over.
But the real nightmare was just beginning.
