Chapter 3 - The Sister's Wrath

It didn't take long for them to realize what I had done.

Three hours later, my phone lit up with a FaceTime call from Jessica.

Normally, I would let it ring, terrified of her explosive temper.

But today, I accepted the call.

Jessica’s face filled the screen, twisted in absolute fury.

“Did you just cut off my cell service?” she demanded, not even bothering to say hello.

“I had to go to a coffee shop just to use the Wi-Fi to call you!”

I adjusted the phone so she could see Maya sleeping peacefully on my chest.

“Yes, I did,” I answered calmly.

“I have a daughter to pay for now, Jessica.”

“I can't afford to fund your lifestyle anymore.”

Jessica scoffed, rolling her eyes dramatically.

“Oh, please, you make great money at the clinic!”

“Mom said you completely lost your mind and slammed the door in her face.”

“You are acting like a crazy person over a simple request for some laptops.”

I felt the familiar urge to apologize rise in my throat, but I forced it down.

“You couldn't even bother to visit me in the hospital,” I reminded her.

“You sent me a thumbs-up emoji while I was in labor.”

“You don't get to ignore my existence and then demand my money.”

Jessica’s eyes narrowed into angry slits.

“You are going to regret this, Sarah.”

“You are tearing this family apart over nothing!”

“No,” I replied, my voice steady as a rock.

“I am building my own family, and you are simply no longer a part of it.”

I ended the call before she could scream another word.
