Chapter 15 - The Cycle Broken

I walked into the nursery before going to bed.
The room was bathed in the soft glow of a star-shaped nightlight.
Maya was sleeping soundly, clutching a small stuffed bunny to her chest.
I leaned over the crib and gently brushed a curl away from her forehead.
She stirred slightly, letting out a soft sigh, completely safe and completely loved.
I thought back to the lonely hospital room where she was born.
I thought about the terrifying moment I realized I had no village to rely on.
But looking at my beautiful home, my secure career, and my happy child, I knew the truth.
I had built my own village.
I had protected her from the generational trauma that had shaped my entire childhood.
Brenda’s toxic voice would never echo in these walls.
Jessica’s selfish demands would never steal from Maya’s future.
The cycle of manipulation and abuse stopped the exact moment I slammed that door a year ago.
I leaned down and kissed my daughter's soft cheek.
“It’s just you and me, sweetie,” I whispered into the quiet room.

“And we are going to be more than okay.”
I turned off the lamp and walked out of the room, leaving the darkness behind me forever.
