Chapter 12 - The Final Door

I looked at the nurse, then back at the two women who shared my DNA.
They had faked a fatal heart condition just to manipulate me into giving Brenda a free place to live.
It was so incredibly twisted that I actually laughed out loud.
“A panic attack,” I repeated, shaking my head in disgust.
“You are truly unbelievable.”
Brenda sat up, the frail, dying mother act instantly vanishing.
“I have nowhere to go, Sarah!” she yelled, her true colors returning.
“You owe me!”
“I gave you life!”
I walked right up to the side of her bed and looked her dead in the eye.
“And I gave you fourteen thousand dollars over the last five years.”
“Consider my debt paid in full.”
I turned to Jessica, who was shrinking back against the wall.
“Never contact me again.”
“If either of you ever come near me or my daughter, I will have you arrested for harassment.”
I turned my back on them and walked out of the hospital room.
I heard Brenda screaming my name down the hallway, but I didn't look back.
I walked out into the bright Seattle sunshine and took a massive, cleansing breath.
