Chapter 13 - A Fresh Start

When I got back home, Aunt Linda was playing peek-a-boo with Maya on the living room rug.
“How did it go?” she asked gently, seeing the exhaustion on my face.
“It was a scam,” I told her with a tired smile.
“She wanted to move into my spare room.”
Aunt Linda rolled her eyes and sighed heavily.
“I figured as much.”
“Sarah, you can't stay in this city.”
“They will always find a way to hover around your life here.”
I looked around the small duplex I had rented for three years.
It held a lot of bad memories of Brenda dropping by unannounced to demand favors.
“You’re right,” I agreed.
Dr. Evans had recently mentioned a colleague who was opening a new veterinary clinic in Portland, Oregon.
He had offered to write me a glowing recommendation if I ever wanted to relocate.
I picked up the phone that afternoon and called Dr. Evans.
Within a week, I had a formal job offer with a significant pay raise.
I found a beautiful little house with a fenced-in yard in a quiet Portland suburb.
I packed up my entire life into a moving truck.
I didn't tell a single soul outside of Aunt Linda and my boss where I was going.
