Chapter 9 - The Arrest

They thought the public eviction was the worst thing that was going to happen to them that day.

They were entirely wrong.

Just as Brenda was sobbing into her phone, trying to call an Uber, three unmarked black vehicles pulled up aggressively to the curb.

Four detectives in plain clothes stepped out, their badges visibly flashing in the afternoon sun.

“Evan Mercer?” the lead detective asked, his voice cutting through Brenda’s theatrical crying.

Evan froze, his eyes darting around wildly like a trapped rat looking for an escape route.

“You are under arrest for grand theft, identity fraud, and multiple counts of felony forgery,” the detective stated clearly.

The officers moved swiftly, spinning Evan around and aggressively clicking heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

“Mom, do something! Call a lawyer!” Evan screamed, finally sounding like the weak little boy he truly was.

But the detectives were not finished.

Another officer stepped towards Brenda, pulling out a second pair of handcuffs.

“Brenda Mercer, you are also under arrest for conspiracy to commit fraud and accessory to grand theft.”

Brenda let out a blood-curdling screech as the cold steel locked around her wrists.

“I didn't do anything! It was all his idea!” the so-called loving mother instantly screamed, throwing her own son under the bus to save herself.

The entire neighborhood was watching now, phones out, recording the ultimate downfall of the arrogant duo.

I looked at Delilah, who was crying, but this time, they were tears of profound relief and closure.

The monsters were finally locked away, and they would never be able to hurt her or my grandson ever again.
