Chapter 5 - The Trap is Set

Over the next two weeks, we played our parts perfectly, letting Evan and Brenda drown in their own unchecked egos.
Delilah bravely ignored Evan's threatening text messages, forwarding every single one of them to Marcus for the growing police file.
Evan formally submitted the forged quitclaim deed to the county clerk's office, officially committing a massive federal offense.
Brenda even started a public Facebook page, portraying herself as the saintly grandmother rescuing her son from a "toxic, gold-digging wife."
Every post was a fresh stab at Delilah's heart, but I reminded her that pride always comes before the absolute hardest fall.
Evan then made his most fatal mistake by filing for emergency full custody of Noah, claiming Delilah was homeless and an unfit mother.
The court granted a temporary hearing, which was exactly the stage Marcus had been waiting to set.
The night before the hearing, Delilah sat in my kitchen, her hands shaking as she held a mug of tea.
“What if the judge believes him, Mom?” she whispered, tears welling in her exhausted eyes.
“What if he manages to take my baby away from me?”
I reached across the table and held her hands tightly.
“They built a house of cards on a foundation of lies, sweetheart,” I told her with unwavering confidence.
“Tomorrow, we turn on the fans and watch their entire fake world blow away.”

She nodded, finally showing a glimmer of the strong, fierce woman I had raised her to be.
We were ready to end this nightmare once and for all.
