Chapter 8 - The Eviction Day

Winning in court was sweet, but taking back my house was the justice I truly craved.
Three days later, I drove up to the house with Delilah, Marcus, and two armed officers from the county sheriff's department.
Evan had stubbornly refused to leave, convinced he could still find a legal loophole to steal my property.
To make matters perfectly poetic, Brenda had invited her entire snobby book club over for a lavish garden party in the backyard.
We walked up the driveway, the crunch of our shoes signaling the absolute end of their reign of terror.
The sheriff banged loudly on the front door, and Brenda answered it holding a crystal champagne flute.
Her smug smile instantly vanished, replaced by a mask of sheer panic when she saw the badges.
“You have exactly ten minutes to vacate the premises,” the sheriff announced loudly.
“What? No, you can't do this, we are entertaining guests!” Brenda shrieked in horror.
Her book club friends began peeking around the corner of the house, whispering and pointing at the unfolding drama.
Evan came rushing down the stairs, looking disheveled and frantic.
“This is my house! You can't throw me out of my own house!” he yelled, trying to push past the deputies.
“The judge determined the deed was fraudulent, Mr. Mercer,” the sheriff said, placing a heavy hand on his weapon.
“If you do not step outside right now, you will be arrested for trespassing and resisting an officer.”

I stood on the sidewalk, holding Delilah's hand, watching the glorious spectacle unfold.
Evan and Brenda were forced out onto the front lawn with nothing but the clothes on their backs, humiliated in front of their entire social circle.
