Chapter 3 - Uncovering the Deep Scheme

By noon, I was sitting in the polished downtown office of Marcus Vance, the most ruthless real estate and fraud attorney in Ohio.

I did not care how much his retainer cost; I would have sold my own soul to see Evan and Brenda behind bars.

Marcus adjusted his glasses as he meticulously reviewed the forged deed and the mountain of fraudulent loan applications.

“The audacity of this scheme is staggering, but honestly, it is incredibly sloppy,” Marcus said, leaning back in his leather chair.

“They notarized this quitclaim deed using a notary public whose license expired three years ago.”

A sharp laugh escaped my lips, fueled by sheer disbelief at their arrogant stupidity.

“So the deed transferring my house to Evan is completely invalid?” I asked, leaning forward eagerly.

“It is worse than invalid; it is a Class 3 felony in this state, carrying a mandatory prison sentence,” Marcus confirmed with a predatory smile.

We spent the next three hours mapping out the financial destruction Evan had caused in Delilah's name.

He had siphoned over eighty thousand dollars into a hidden offshore account, all while convincing my daughter she was going crazy.

“We have enough here to go to the police today, but I advise a more strategic approach,” Marcus suggested.

“Let them lock themselves into the lie under oath first.”

He explained that if Evan filed the forged deed with the county clerk, the federal fraud charges would multiply exponentially.

“We let them think they have won, we let them file the paperwork, and then we drop the hammer,” he concluded.

I thought about my grandson sleeping in that cold car, clutching his little dinosaur.

“Draft the papers, Marcus,” I said, my voice as cold as ice.

“I want them to lose everything in front of an audience.”
