Chapter 9 - The Miracle

The paramedics treated Emily’s wrists and face in the nursery, bandaging her wounds carefully.

"I need to go," Emily pleaded with the EMTs, trying to stand up.

"My son, Leo, he is at the county hospital, and he is dying."

I stepped forward, placing a gentle, reassuring hand on her shoulder.

"You are not taking a taxi, Emily," I told her firmly.

I turned to the police lieutenant who was taking my final statement.

"Can you provide an escort?" I asked him, my voice filled with desperate urgency.

"Her son was poisoned by my wife, and we need to get to the hospital right now."

The lieutenant nodded grimly, speaking quickly into his shoulder radio.

Five minutes later, I was driving my SUV behind a speeding police cruiser with its sirens blaring.

Emily sat in the passenger seat, crying silently as she prayed for her little boy.

We arrived at the county hospital, rushing through the emergency room doors.

A tired doctor met us in the hallway, looking grim and exhausted.

"His kidneys are failing from the toxin," the doctor explained softly to Emily.

"We do not have the specialized dialysis equipment for a child his size here."

Emily collapsed into my arms, letting out a gut-wrenching wail of despair.

"Where is the equipment?" I demanded, pulling out my black titanium credit card.

"Memorial Hospital in the city," the doctor replied, surprised by my aggressive tone.

"Order a medevac helicopter immediately," I commanded, handing him the card.

"I don't care what it costs, just save this boy's life."
