Chapter 4 - The Struggle for Survival

"You were supposed to die in a tragic car accident tonight, Arthur," Victoria sighed, examining the blade.
"The brakes on your sports car have been completely severed."
My stomach plummeted as I realized how close I had come to driving that car instead of taking a cab.
"Why?" I asked, my voice breaking with a mixture of betrayal and fury.
"Because your life insurance policy is worth twenty million dollars, darling," she smiled wickedly.
"And I am terribly bored with playing the role of a devoted mother."
She lunged at me with shocking speed, aiming the blade directly at my chest.
I swung the heavy bronze lamp, deflecting her arm just in time.
The knife sliced through the fabric of my suit jacket, grazing my ribs.
I grunted in pain, stumbling backward against the nursery wall.
Victoria did not hesitate, slashing at me again with the ferocity of a wild animal.
I threw the lamp at her legs, causing her to trip over the heavy base.
She crashed onto the hardwood floor, dropping the knife just inches from my foot.
I kicked the weapon across the room, watching it slide under the crib.
"You are insane!" I shouted, jumping on top of her to pin her arms down.
Victoria shrieked, scratching wildly at my face with her sharp acrylic nails.
"Let me go!" she screamed, thrashing beneath my weight.

I managed to grab both of her wrists, holding them firmly against the floor.
"It is over, Victoria," I panted, blood dripping from the scratches on my cheek.
