Chapter 1 - The Lock and the Lie

I heard the sharp, rhythmic click of Victoria’s heels echoing down the long hallway.

The sound grew louder with every passing second.

Panic seized my chest, but my instincts took over immediately.

I spun around and lunged for the heavy oak door of the nursery.

My hands shook as I turned the deadbolt, the solid metal sliding into place with a loud click.

Emily flinched at the sound, her tear-streaked face pale with sheer terror.

"What were you about to say, Emily?" I demanded, rushing back to her side.

"Tell me right now before she tries to get in."

Emily swallowed hard, her chest heaving as the babies whimpered against her.

"She is not who you think she is, Arthur," Emily whispered, her voice trembling.

"She didn't just refuse to let me see my son."

"She is the reason my son is in the hospital in the first place."

I felt the blood drain from my face, a cold sweat breaking out on my neck.

"What are you talking about?" I asked, my voice barely a harsh whisper.

"I caught her putting something in my bags last week, something from a small vial," Emily sobbed.

"I didn't understand what it was until the doctors told me my boy was poisoned with antifreeze."

My mind spun as the horrifying reality of her words began to sink in.

Victoria had deliberately poisoned a child just to keep her nanny trapped in this house.

"She wants me isolated so she can frame me," Emily continued, fresh tears spilling down her bruised cheeks.

"Frame you for what?" I asked, my heart pounding against my ribs.

"For your murder," Emily gasped, locking her terrified eyes with mine.

Before I could even process the magnitude of that confession, the brass doorknob rattled violently.

"Emily, open this door right now!" Victoria’s sharp, demanding voice hissed from the other side.

I stood frozen, staring at the locked door as the true monster of my home demanded entry.
