Chapter 9 - The Final Verdict

They caught Jessica trying to cross the border into Mexico three days later.

She was hiding in the trunk of a smuggler’s car, clutching a duffel bag filled with whatever jewelry she hadn't been able to pawn. The image of her being dragged out, covered in dirt and screaming in handcuffs, was broadcast on every channel in the country.

Six months later, we sat in a federal courtroom for her sentencing.

Sarah sat beside me in the gallery, holding my hand. She looked radiant. The exhaustion and hunger were gone, replaced by the fierce, beautiful strength of a mother who had won the war.

Jessica sat at the defense table in a bright orange jumpsuit. Her hair was stringy. The arrogant smirk was completely gone.

The judge looked down from the bench with absolute disgust.

“Jessica Lawson,” the judge stated. “Your actions are some of the most calculated, malicious, and purely evil I have seen in my twenty years on the bench. You attempted to destroy an innocent woman, steal a man's fortune, and weaponize the child welfare system for your own greed.”

Jessica began to weep, but no one in the courtroom felt a shred of pity.

“I sentence you to fifteen years in federal prison, without the possibility of early parole.”

As the bailiffs hauled her away, Jessica turned and locked eyes with me. There was no defiance left. Just the hollow realization that her greed had buried her alive.

I didn't smile. I didn't gloat. I just turned my back on her and walked out of the courtroom with the only woman I had ever truly loved.
