Chapter 1 - The Trump Card

The gravel crunched beneath the heavy tires of Jessica’s town car as her two lawyers stepped forward, flanking her like attack dogs. The sinister smile on her face made the blood in my veins run cold.

Sarah instinctively stepped back, shielding the twins with her body. The babies, sensing their mother’s fear, began to whimper.

“What are you doing here, Jessica?” I demanded, stepping between her and my family.

“Oh, David, darling,” Jessica cooed, her voice dripping with fake sympathy. “I came to help. I know you’ve been looking into things. You’re a smart man. I knew you’d figure out the money and the photos eventually. But you’re too late.”

She snapped her fingers. One of the litigators opened his briefcase and pulled out a manila folder, holding it out to me.

“What is this?” I snarled, refusing to take it.

“It’s an emergency court order,” Jessica said, her smile widening. “Signed by a family court judge just an hour ago. It grants me and you immediate, exclusive physical custody of those children.”

Sarah gasped, clutching the twins tighter. “No! You can’t!”

“Oh, but I can, sweetie,” Jessica sneered. “You see, David, while you were busy reading Marcus’s little private eye reports, I was busy filing an affidavit. I presented the court with ‘evidence’ of Sarah’s severe drug addiction, mental instability, and homelessness. I even included a sworn statement from the clinic doctor where she gave birth, testifying that she abandoned the babies in the ward for two days.”

“That’s a lie!” Sarah screamed, tears streaming down her face. “I never left them! Not for one second!”

“The judge didn’t care,” Jessica laughed. “And since we are legally engaged, David, and you are the biological father, the court deemed our luxury estate the only safe environment for the infants. Child Protective Services is three minutes away. They are going to take the babies, hand them to me, and Sarah will be arrested for child endangerment.”

I stared at the woman I had almost married. She wasn't just a liar; she was a monster.

“You won’t touch them,” I said, my voice dropping to a deadly whisper.

“I already have,” Jessica smirked as the distant wail of police sirens began to echo through the dusty Texas air.
