Chapter 7 - The Desperate Strike

Jessica was a cornered animal, and cornered animals always bite.
The next morning, I woke up to my phone vibrating off the nightstand. It was my head of PR.
“Turn on the news, David. Right now.”
I grabbed the remote and flicked on the TV. Jessica was standing on the steps of the county courthouse, surrounded by a swarm of reporters. She was putting on the performance of a lifetime. She wore no makeup, her hair was a mess, and she was crying hysterically into the microphones.
“David Sterling is a monster!” she sobbed for the cameras. “He abused me physically and emotionally for a year! Now that I am trying to leave him, he has frozen my accounts and threatened my life! He is a dangerous billionaire who thinks he can buy the law!”
The chyrons flashed across the screen: BILLIONAIRE CEO ACCUSED OF ABUSE BY FIANCÉE.
My stock prices began to plummet in real-time.
Marcus walked into the living room, holding a tablet. “She’s trying to force you into a settlement. She figures if she ruins your public image, you’ll pay her to go away and drop the criminal charges.”
“She really thinks I care about the company more than my family,” I said, shaking my head.

“What’s the play, boss?”
I smiled. A cold, ruthless smile. “Call a press conference for noon. Right in the lobby of Vanguard Enterprises. Invite every network she just spoke to. It’s time to show the world exactly who Jessica Lawson is.”
