Chapter 6 - The Quiet Moments

I returned to the penthouse late that evening. The city lights of Dallas twinkled below, but the only thing I cared about was inside those walls.

Sarah was sitting in the nursery I had ordered my team to furnish that afternoon. She was rocking the twins—a boy and a girl.

“Liam and Maya,” she said softly as I stood in the doorway.

“They’re beautiful,” I choked out, stepping closer.

Sarah looked at me. The defensive wall she had built around herself seemed to soften, just a fraction. “Do you want to hold him?”

My breath caught in my throat. “Can I?”

She nodded. I stepped forward, my hands trembling, and gently lifted my son from her arms. He was so small, so fragile. He looked up at me with my exact eyes, blinking sleepily, and wrapped his tiny hand around my index finger.

A tear slipped down my cheek and landed on his blanket.

“I missed all of it,” I whispered. “The ultrasounds. The birth. Their first smiles. I let her steal that from us.”

“You did,” Sarah said, her voice firm but not cruel. “You didn't trust me, David. When she planted that necklace, you didn't even let me explain. You threw my bags onto the lawn.”

“I was a fool. An arrogant, stupid fool.”

“Yes, you were,” Sarah agreed. “But you’re here now. You saved us at the mission. And you kept your promise to protect them today.”

She reached out and rested a hand on my arm. It was the first time she had willingly touched me in over a year. It felt like a jolt of electricity.

“We have a long way to go, David. But... I want them to know their father.”
