Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

"Get away from her," a small, sharp voice demanded.

Arthur spun around. Standing in the doorway was Leo. The boy had run ahead of Marcus and the security team, wanting to check on the little girl he had saved. Leo’s eyes were locked onto the syringe in Arthur’s hand. He didn't know what the man was doing, but he knew what sneaking around a hospital room looked like.

"Well, well," Arthur sneered, hiding the syringe behind his back. "You must be the little hero I've heard so much about. You're Sarah's brat, aren't you? You have her eyes. Meddlesome and annoying."

"Where is Mr. Vance?" Leo demanded, standing his ground despite his knees shaking.

"Mr. Vance is a very busy man," Arthur said, taking a slow, menacing step toward the boy. "He doesn't have time for street trash like you. In fact, he sent me here to take you away. We're going to go for a little ride."

Arthur lunged forward, grabbing Leo by the arm. Leo screamed and kicked, his taped shoe connecting sharply with Arthur’s shin. Arthur cursed, dropping the syringe, which shattered on the linoleum floor.

"Let him go, Arthur."

The voice boomed from the hallway like a crack of thunder. Arthur froze. Marcus Vance stood there, his eyes burning with a murderous rage. Flanking him were four heavily armed security guards.

Marcus looked at the shattered syringe on the floor, then at Arthur's gloved hands. The realization of what his "trusted" friend was about to do to his five-year-old daughter hit Marcus with staggering force.

"You tried to kill my daughter," Marcus whispered, his voice vibrating with lethal intent.
