Chapter 14 - Rebuilding
Six months passed. The blistering winter had melted into a bright, hopeful spring.
Arthur Pendelton was sentenced to thirty years in federal prison without the possibility of parole. His assets had been liquidated, and a massive portion of the funds was placed into a charitable foundation dedicated to providing free, life-saving medical devices to impoverished families. The foundation was named after Leo’s late sister.
Sarah Jenkins had made a miraculous, full recovery. The experimental treatment had not only repaired her lungs but regenerated the damaged tissue in her heart. She was back in the laboratory, leading a team of brilliant scientists, entirely funded by Marcus Vance. Her first project was redesigning the neuro-stimulator, ensuring that no battery would ever leak again.
Leo’s life had transformed into something out of a dream. He and his mother had moved into a beautiful, spacious home on the Vance estate. Leo attended the finest private school, but he remained the same humble, observant kid he had always been.
He and Lily had become inseparable. They ran through the massive gardens of the estate, playing hide-and-seek among the rose bushes. Lily no longer needed to fear her condition; with Sarah constantly monitoring and upgrading her device, she was just a normal, happy five-year-old girl.
Marcus sat on the patio, sipping coffee and watching the two children chase a butterfly. Sarah walked out, holding a tablet filled with research data, and sat down next to him.
"They look happy," Sarah said, smiling as she watched Leo hoist Lily onto his shoulders.

"We did," she replied. "But I think we both know who the real leader is."
