Chapter 6 - The Bitter Truth

"I... I didn't know," Marcus stammered, falling to his knees beside the dirty mattress. The ruthless billionaire, a man who intimidated world leaders, was reduced to tears. "Sarah, I swear on my life, I didn't know about the defect. I didn't know about Arthur's threats."

"It doesn't matter anymore," Sarah whispered, her eyes fluttering shut. "It's too late. I have severe chemical pneumonia from working in unlicensed chemical factories just to pay rent. I'm dying, Marcus. Please... just promise me you'll take care of Leo."

"No," Marcus growled, his sadness suddenly vaporizing into a blazing, terrifying anger. He looked at his security chief. "Thomas! Get her in the car. Now! We are taking her to my private hospital wing. Tell the doctors to prep the ICU. She is not dying today."

As Thomas gently lifted Sarah into his arms, Marcus looked at Leo. The boy was crying, clutching his mother's hand.

"Leo," Marcus said, his voice dropping to an iron-clad vow. "Your mother is going to live. And the people who did this to your family are going to pay. I promise you."

As they hurried down the stairs, Marcus pulled out his phone and dialed his private investigator. "I need everything you can find on Arthur Pendelton. Bank records, emails, offshore accounts. Do it quietly. He doesn't know I know."

The pieces were falling into place, but Marcus knew Arthur was a dangerous, cornered rat. If Arthur found out Sarah was alive and talking to Marcus, he wouldn't hesitate to silence them both.
