Chapter 2 - An Impossible Explanation

"Stop that boy!" Marcus barked.

Two burly security guards intercepted Leo before he could disappear into the sea of commuters. They gently but firmly escorted the trembling eight-year-old back to the center of the room. Leo stared at the marble floor, his duct-taped sneakers looking painfully out of place next to Marcus’s custom Italian leather shoes.

"How did you know how to do that?" Marcus asked, his tone demanding but laced with genuine shock. He knelt so he was eye-level with the boy. "My daughter, Lily, has a neurological condition so rare that even top-tier EMTs don't know how to handle a device malfunction. How could a child possibly know the magnetic swipe sequence?"

Leo swallowed hard, his skinny shoulders trembling under his faded sweater. "Because," he whispered, his voice cracking, "my little sister had the exact same device. The exact same sickness."

Marcus’s brow furrowed. "Had?"

Tears welled up in Leo’s eyes, cutting clean tracks through the dirt on his cheeks. "She died last year. The battery in her machine failed. We didn't have the money for the surgery to replace it. My mom taught me the magnet trick to keep her heart beating during her spells... but one night, I fell asleep. I missed it."

The silence in the train station was deafening. The mother covered her mouth, stifling a sob. Marcus Vance, a man known for his ruthless business tactics and cold demeanor, felt a heavy blow to his chest. This impoverished boy, living with unimaginable guilt, had just used his trauma to save Lily's life.

"What is your name, son?" Marcus asked softly.

"Leo."

"Well, Leo," Marcus said, standing up and taking the boy's tiny, calloused hand in his. "You are coming with us. I owe you a debt I intend to pay."
