Chapter 7 - The Viper in the Nest

Back at the hospital, Arthur Pendelton, an elegant man with silver hair and a sharp, predatory smile, paced the hallway outside Lily’s room. He had rushed to the hospital the moment he heard Marcus’s daughter had collapsed.
Arthur’s phone buzzed. It was a text from his informant inside Marcus's security detail. Marcus is bringing in a Jane Doe. Severe pneumonia. Kid is with her. The woman is Sarah Jenkins.
Arthur’s blood ran cold. Sarah Jenkins. The one loose end he had failed to tie up all those years ago. If Marcus spoke to her, if he listened to her, Arthur’s entire life of luxury, his shares, his freedom—they would all instantly evaporate. He would go to federal prison for corporate manslaughter.
Arthur looked through the glass window into Lily’s room. The little girl was sleeping peacefully, hooked up to an IV drip. He knew Marcus would be arriving soon. He needed a distraction. A massive one. Something so catastrophic it would tear Marcus away from Sarah long enough for Arthur to deal with her.
Arthur slipped on a pair of latex gloves from a nearby cart. He calmly opened the door to Lily's room and stepped inside. He approached the IV bag hanging beside her bed, pulling a small vial of concentrated potassium from his tailored jacket pocket.

Before he could inject the lethal dose into her line, the door swung open.
