Chapter 7 - The Cornered Rat

The next morning, David didn't come home.

Instead, I watched from my kitchen as three black SUVs pulled up to our driveway. Men in dark suits stepped out, but they weren't the police. They were Volkov’s men.

I answered the door in my bathrobe, clutching a tissue, playing the terrified widow.

"Where is your husband, Mrs. Vance?" the lead man asked, his voice thick with a Russian accent.

"I don't know," I cried, tears welling in my eyes. "He didn't come home. He’s been acting so strange since our son died. I found this on his desk..."

I handed the man a printed copy of the fake email chain I had drafted between David and Chloe, outlining their plan to steal the money and run.

The man read the paper, his jaw tightening. "He is trying to flee. Thank you, Mrs. Vance. We will not bother you again. But when we find your husband, he will have much to answer for."

As they drove away, my phone rang. It was David.

"Elena!" he panicked, out of breath. "Elena, you have to help me! There are men following me. The SEC raided my office this morning. They think I stole Volkov’s money! Chloe set me up!"

"Oh, David," I whispered into the receiver. "Chloe didn't set you up."

Silence hung on the line. "What?"

"Chloe didn't steal the money. Chloe didn't freeze your accounts. I did."
